Brekel Kinect, the free Kinect 3D scanner (discontinued)
Brekel Kinect was a free Windows application from 2010, back when the first Kinect for Xbox 360 was brand new. It captured 3D point clouds ("3D scanning") and did skeleton motion capture with a single Kinect sensor, and could stream into Autodesk MotionBuilder with a plugin. For many people it was their first taste of markerless motion capture at home.
Why it's no longer available
The app was built on the OpenNI framework and drivers from that era, which are long abandoned. The old installers no longer work reliably on current Windows. Rather than host downloads that mostly produce frustration, the app and its driver installers have been retired.
What to use instead
Its functionality lives on, much improved, in the current Brekel apps:
- Body for markerless body motion capture. The newest version, Body v3, supports multiple sensor brands (including Kinect for Xbox 360 / Kinect v1), multi-sensor fusion, webcams and a deep-learning tracker. Body v1 also still supports the original Kinect v1 sensor if you still have one.
- PointCloud for 3D point cloud recording and volumetric video, with export to mesh caches and other formats. PointCloud v1 covers the original Kinect v1 sensor.
- Face for markerless face motion capture.
All current apps have free trials, so you can check what works with your hardware. Questions: ask on Discord or via the contact form.
