Latest OpenNI drivers don’t work (yet)

The most recent versions of the OpenNI drivers don’t seem to work with Brekel Kinect.
Please use the auto installer from my downloads section to handle the driver installation and DO NOT use the manual procedure for installing the latest drivers.

Good and bad news, new OpenNI drivers available

The good news, new OpenNI drivers are available, possibly enabling Multi-Kinect support for skeleton tracking.

The bad news, the download links have changed, so till I update the links on my installation page and auto installer get them yourself at openni.org

Even worse, seems like the Kinect isn’t covered yet (only the PrimeSense reference sensor) so we’ll have to wait a little till those get released. Not sure if is possible to do a fresh installation now as the old links are gone.
Maybe stable release OpenNI with unstable release avin2 works? Ur on your own to try.

Also check the OpenNI google group for help.

Brekel OpenNI Kinect Auto Installer

Just added Brekel OpenNI Kinect Auto Installer to the downloads section.

A still slightly experimental all-in-one  installer that handles downloading and running the installers for OpenNI and the Kinect Drivers.

PCL KinectFusion opensource binary download

As you may know the amazingly clever people at pointclouds.org haven been working on an opensource implementation of the Kinect Fusion algorithm.

The original Microsoft Research implementation:

The open source Pointclouds.org PCL implementation:

It’s still in development and experimental, and only available as part of their unstable PCL coding libraries.

But out of curiosity I tried compiling the latest code from their svn repository to see it in real life. And I thought I’d provide it here for any non coders that are interested in it.

Keep in mind a few things though:

  • I have not coded this, it’s the clever work of the people at pointclouds.org
  • I currently don’t have any plans to integrate this with Brekel Kinect (yet)
  • It may not be very useful at the moment, besides a technology preview
  • As this is CUDA (GPU) accelerated, you NEED an Nvidia graphics card (probably of the 400 or 500 series), with recent drivers
  • You need the very latest OpenNI drivers installed and working (try my 1.4.0.2 auto installer)
  • No guarantees or support from me if it doesn’t work 🙂
Here’s the binaries, simply unpack and run:

Brekel Kinect v0.49 update

No new core features, just updated to work with the latest of the OpenNI drivers.
They should be a bit more stable, as well as offer quicker skeleton calibration.

This should make things less confusing for new users as well as all the versions are now aligned again to the latest and greatest.

Recurring users: make sure you re-download and re-run the auto driver installer please.

Auto Driver Installer fixed again.

Unfortunately OpenNI changed their download links, so please re-download the latest installer which has the updated links.

Updated drivers

Since the mirror for the drivers went down, I went ahead and updated the drivers again.

  • They now use the latest OpenNI/NITE drivers directly from the PrimeSense site, it seems like the only difference is that skeleton calibration is a little bit quicker.
  • The Kinect sensor driver is now used from PCL, which offers a higher quality for the color stream than the previous one.
  • The auto installer should now also attempt to uninstall any previous drivers.

Updating is optional if you’re happy with your current setup.

Seemed like the PCL sensor drivers were generating problems on fresh installs, reverted back to the good ole’ Avin2 version.

Some good news, old driver mirror available at kinecthacks.nl

Thanks to kinecthacks.nl and their mirroring of the old OpenNI/NITE drivers it is again possible to do a fresh install with Brekel Kinect.

So check the installation instructions page or simply use the auto installer as the links work again.

Bad news (for now)

As you may know OpenNI released new drivers for their PrimeSense sensor yesterday, and removed the old versions.

This means there is currently NO way that I know of to get the Kinect running on a fresh install!
Not until someone (probably avin2) adapts the PrimeSense installer to work with the Kinect device. So stay tuned!

Installation instructions

This program is OLD, check the main page for the latest versions.

Quick and automatic method (needs internet connection):

1. Completely remove any currently installed Kinect drivers (OpenNI, OpenKinect-libreenect, Code Laboratories CL-NUI)
2. Install drivers using the All-in-one OpenNI Kinect Auto Installer (from the downloads page)
3. Install the latest Brekel Kinect base application (from the downloads page)
4. Optionally install the MotionBuilder plugins (from the downloads page)

Manual method (only in case the automatic method doesn’t work, or you know what you’re doing):

1. Completely remove any currently installed Kinect drivers (OpenNI, OpenKinect-libreenect, Code Laboratories CL-NUI)
2. Download and install OpenNI (pick 32bit even on a 64bit OS) (link is dead since Apple acquired PrimeSense/OpenNI and discontinued it)
3. Download and install the Kinect drivers
4. Download and install NITE (pick 32bit even on a 64bit OS) (link is dead since Apple acquired PrimeSense/OpenNI and discontinued it)
Use this key during installation: 0KOIk2JeIBYClPWVnMoRKn5cdY4=

Your Windows Device Manager should look something like this:

5. Try one of the OpenNI samples:
C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenNI\Samples\Bin\Release\NiSimpleViewer.exe
It should come up with a yellowish fulscreen stream of the depth sensor.
(Note: examples are only included in the Development Editions of OpenNI)
Go back to step 1 if this doesn’t run.

6. Install the latest Brekel Kinect base application (from the downloads page)
(Your firewall may ask for permission to open a port)

7. Optionally install the MotionBuilder plugins (from the downloads page)

Troubleshooting:

– Make sure you use the separate power adapter for your Kinect.
(Included with standalone Kinect, separately purchasable if you got a Kinect bundled with your XBox360)
– Make sure your Kinect is connected directly to your computer not through a USB hub
– Sometimes swapping to a different USB port helps
– Were you able to run one the OpenNI samples as mentioned in point 5?
– Check the FAQ / Forums
– The OpenNI google groups are a great source for help and news
