FAQ – Skeleton Tracking

  • The quality of the motion is pretty bad, how come?

The Kinect uses optical analysis, so basically if it can’t see it it’s not there.
Besides it’s primary design wasn’t built for motion capture, hence it’s low pricepoint

  • What I can I do to improve the quality?

Make sure you stay visible to the sensor, don’t hide your limbs behind your back.
Poses with a clear silhouette will work the best, as do slower movements;
Tight clothing will work better than loose clothing.
Tracking is done purely on the Infra Red spectrum so make sure there are no light sources with a lot of Infra Red in them. (sunlight, old school light bulbs)
Nevertheless you may need to do some cleanup in the end.

  • Why is the tracking noisy in the first few seconds, while using the latest drivers?

The latest drivers auto calibrate users, not needing the Psi Pose anymore.
However data may be noisier than usual while the auto calibrator is doing it’s work in the first few seconds a new user enters the view.
